Met the new director.
She says everything is going well. At the start of each semester in the KSSPE faculty meeting, she shows them how to order books and materials. They are all good at entering the information themselves (and they are).
Hasn't had any problems with the new system.
Primarily uses the KSSPE research guide and the databases recommended there.
Doesn't hear too much from the exercise science folks, but I have worked with them in their research methods classes. They do order materials.
Teaches an online-only class in the summer, may need help with that in the future. I tried to explain the new role that LD plays, but that was a bit confusing. We'll address it next year. I will continue to update her with anything KSSPE-related.
Appreciates the course reserves very much.
New Programs:
--Strength and conditioning concentration (undergraduate)
--Coaching concentration being added to the Master's program (I think)
--New Master in Athletic Training (this has been approved and is at the state level)

Library Liaison meeting
I met with the coordinator for THE/MUS/IAC today.
They would like more streaming resources, plus digital copies of scores. (gave examples of percussion and brass and orchestra scores used recently)
Definitely uses JSTOR
World music is one of their biggest classes with 140 students. (online and in person)
Music appreciation will be starting in the spring 2020.
Emailed her the sites for the LibGuides, which she knew about but needed a reminder for their addresses.
Teaches music in the elementary class (only pedagogy one right now).
Beginning recorder and piano are taught there.

Making the Case for connections: Internationalization, Global Learning, and Courses
A faculty development workshop by Dr. Dawn Whitehead (AAC&U)
College students need to be prepared to work in a global context. Employers are placing more emphasis on hiring candidates with global knowledge and experience. 70% say their company is globally connected.

Wrote the book "A Tribute to Mom, We Survived Together"
He was 2 1/2 when the war started, saw his own brother killed right in front of him by the Nazis. Spoke Yiddish, Polish, and Russian.
He first went to a Ukranian concentration camp, then Auschwitz
"Family is very very important." The best way he can die is to teach others about his life.
You are nothing without family.
The world today is so sad.. why are we killing each other?
Stop being selfish .
"The little letters after your name do not matter, it's what's on your heart."

For this workshop, people of color, nonwhite, minority
Racial justice.. justice for all, subset of social justice
Race is a social construction.
Cognitivie dissonance: Some think that some people are not fully human!
Individual racism: when a person has conscious thoughts that one race is better than another
Ethnicity vs. race: Some use ethnicity as a shield, as in I am Irish not white.

iGen: Why Today's Super-Connected Kids are growig up less rebellious, more tolerant, less happy -- and completely unprepared for adulthood

-Sometimes the authors' correlations did not equal causation
Need to remember that our students are adults, not children.
Let them be uncomfortable, sometimes
iGen -- still very important to have social interactions, but are they?
(p. 90). They have less and less because they are on technology/social media.
iGen doesn't read as much... example of a prof. who gave an 8 popular press assignment, and the students complained about it!
Most important for my work:
Given how much iGen'ers learn online, one of the most important lessons is how to judge content. .. .iGen'ers need to be taught about sources and evaluation." gives examples of peer-reviewed vs. blog sources (p. 308).

Green Dot Training
I attended this training on 10/31/19.
"Green Dot is a national program we implement here at the College at Brockport; it is a bystander intervention program whose focus is preventing sexual assault, relationship violence, and stalking."
We are trying to start a culture change here on campus; that process will take time. Started with the President's cabinet and now faculty/staff. Upper classmen will be trained in the spring semester.
Similar to "Eagle Checkin" where you check in with folks to see how they are doing.
Three D's:
Direct
Delegate
Distract
There are both proactive and reactive green dots. We are trying to diffuse any of the red dots that appear on campus.

Put a statement in their syllabi
Develop course assignments related to greendot topics
Use the language in conversations with students
